Stick-slip is caused by the surfaces alternating between sticking to each other and sliding over each other, with a corresponding change in the force of friction. The static friction coefficient between two surfaces is larger than the kinetic friction coefficient. If an applied force is large enough to overcome the static friction, then the reduction of the friction to the kinetic friction can cause a sudden jump in the velocity of the sliding object.
The base weight is connected to a load cell which monitors the friction force or pull from the rotating weight which rests on the surface of a steel disc inside the disc holder.
A number of weights are supplied and can be added on top of the base weight to increase the amount of force acting on the system. The disc runs inside a surround which enables lubrication to be added without spillage. This varies the experimental parameters and results obtained.
